The Cistern is 8 meters deep and is still under the houses that originally covered the site. As seen it is bell shaped and has three side supporting columns. There are signs of red ochre on the walls.
The cistern remained in use even when there was no knowledge of the Hypogeum next to it. Farmers must have used its water to irrigate their fields as they still do at the Misqa Neolithic water tanks close to Mnajdra. When it was excavated, cannonballs were found on the bottom. |
