This space is filled up with some remains of the human bones that were found in the Hypogeum. It is calculated that about 7,000 bodies were interred in the underground rooms. The bodies were most probably left to decompose above ground, and then the remains taken to be placed underground. Many of the bones are covered with red ochre. In two locations in the Hypogeum, where there are human bone deposits, the stratigraphy was left intact for future research. |
