In the 1770s, Jean Houel, painter to the King of France, travelled to Sicily, Lipari and Malta. He drew many illustrations that were later published in Paris in four volumes called Voyage Picturesque des Isles de Sicile, Lipari, et de Malta. Houel refers to the site as 'Tadarnadur Isrira'; the name of the location in the 1770s. Only the high megaliths are visible, and the rest of the ruins came to light when the site was excavated in the 19th century.
