How The Crib Was Conceived and Developed
|
The Crib has many unique characteristics,
perhaps it is the most novel of its kind. After the
first presentation of the Crib 1998, many changes and
refinements were made. In 2000 the number of display
grew to 130 and by 2002 more than 220 images were dotted
throughtout the village.
The Crib was the creative
idea of a lady from Villar Focchiardo who loves this
village very much. It was her plan to create wooden
figures typifying realistic scenes of every day life
and scenes from the past.
Many recycled materials were
used which made the cost of the whole project very reasonable.
As one walks through this picturesque village one can
view forms representing many humble workers as cobblers,
tinkers, painters, shepherds, etc. As the project grew
it expanded from Castagneretto road to Comba, another
area. For good reason the Crib, today is called "The
Crib of Villar Focchiardo" or "Presepe of Villar Focchiardo".
The residents uniquely personalize
each display. They add decorations, ornaments, and lights
showing much creativity.
In the center of Castagneretto
at the very old house, 11/A is the "Nativity Scene".
To the visitor viewing this
from the street, it almost appears to be a magical vision.
Various lights illuminate the scene and Christmas carols
and heavenly music can be heard in the background.
In addition to touring the
many scenes of "The Crib of Villar Focchiardo" visitors
have the opportunity to discover this delighfull and
charming country village. It is a good idea to visit
the Crib during the day, but it is particularly beautiful
after sunset when all the figures are illuminated.
This creates an almost magical
setting. Soon after Christmas many fluttering "Befane"
will be seen throughout the streets of Villar Focchiardo
astride to their classic brooms. They will have their
large sack of toys for all children
